Fill effect is transparent, but print is not

Power Point 2003. On top of a JPG image a put a box that is filled with
color. The top box is tranparent with some fill effect so that it looks like
the image underneath it is edited that way. Looks great on presentation, but
print preview and printing (color) does not include the transparency effect.
HP printer is networked but settings seem OK. I set the printer to PDF writer
and have the same issue.

Thanks for any help.

That's probably a limitation in the printer driver. If it's an option
to replace the driver, you can check to see if HP has one, though this
may not solve the problem - it's just one possibility.

The other thing that I can think of is to convert the two part effect
into an actual image that replaces the original. This may or may not
be satisfactory - you'll just have to try it (on a copy).

To combine the two objects into one image using PowerPoint, select
them both and then Cut the combination out. This puts them together
on the clipboard. Then use Edit/PasteSpecial/JPG Image to paste them
back to the slide. Now the printer has to print the full effect.
However, it is possible that the translation will be different enough
from the original effect/ and or the printer not good enough so that
you won't be happy with the results. I've used this approach a few
times and sometimes it's fine and other times not. It all depends on
the exact image and overlayed effect.
