Fill effect patterns in Word and Publisher print too small

In May of this year I posted a report of my difficulties with printing fill
effect patterns. I had been using Office 97 on a computer running Windows 98
and a HP Deskjet 720c printer. Patterns were printing out with approx. 10
squares to the inch.
In Office 2003 XP Pro, on a computer running XP Pro 2003 and using a HP 5650
Deskjet printer they were printing out at 20 squares to the inch.

Bob Buckland answered my post - Thanks Bob - and now that summer and the
gardening season are over I can once again concentrate my thoughts on this
matter and report back on the results of his suggestions for attempting to
solve these problems.

I tried the cut and special paste method which you suggested, Bob but it did
not really solve the problem. The resulting print size of the fill when
pasted as a JPEG or PNG was not much larger than a direct print. If pasted
in as a metafile the printed size of the pattern was so small that it almost
looked like a solid fill.

I also tried pasting into Paint Shop Pro and found that although this
maintained the size of the fill pattern, the overall image was larger than
the original Word one when printed. Calculating the percentage of the size
increase and reducing the size of the original document by the necessary
amount in Word before copying and pasting solved that problem. This method
will be a reasonable compromise for some things.

With regard to printer definition being the cause of the problem, I dug out
the instruction book for the 720c printer and the specifications are exactly
the same as my new one - 300dpi for fastdraft and 600 for the rest. The 5650
printer has a maximum setting of 1200 dpi for photo printing and I have
found that at that setting the fills print out larger than at 300 or 600 dpi
but still not large enough.

The old computer has now been replaced with a new one running XP Pro 2003
with Office XP Pro 2003. I have installed the XP drivers for the 720c
printer and the fill patterns now print small on that too.

Very frustrating !!!

Does this info give any more food for thought?
