Filling a cell with an "X"

Is there a way to fill a cell with an "X" or check mark similiar to the
way the checkbox in the formatting pallet does? For instance, i just
want the cell to be 'checked' or 'not checked (or on or off) if that
makes sense. I want to use it eventually to be able to total up certain
Calls for Service if 2 particular cells are 'checked'. if they are,
then it would count as a call for service in a log sheet i created.

I guess I dont use the checkbox on the format toolbar because I dont
understand it.

I'm using the number "3" in a column set to Zapf Dingbats font. That gives a
very decent checkmark (I set the font to bold and red, too).

Another way could be to use the following formula:
=CHAR(195)
But it's not as easy to enter manually, and I still prefer the Zapf Dingbats
checkmark.
