Filling a Custom Made AutoShape with a Photo

I have a custom made shape I'd like to fill with a photo. The shape is a
rectangle with one rounded corner, created in Illustrator. I saved it as a
..png. When I bring the .png into PowerPoint and try to apply Fill
Effects/picture, nothing happens. Also, when the .png is on a colored
background, you can see a white corner outside the rounded part of the
rectangle. I want to use this particular shape so we can control the radius
of the rounded corner, and mirror the elements we have in other collateral.
Any suggestions or workarounds?

Off the top of my head, I'd say you can't do this with a PNG, but you might
be able to with an EMF. Try exporting the file from Illustrator as an EMF
instead.

The PNG is an image -- so it won't act like a border or autoshape the way
you're describing. The white corner is a bit odd and could have to do with
how the rounded corner was created in Illo. You may need to use the
pathfinder tools there and delete that white fill area.

Well, I don't know if this is of interest to you, but I was able to somewhat
recreate this effect just using PPT 2003 as the image editor.

1. Draw a round rectangle
2. Draw rectangles(s) in the same color to square off 3 of the rounded corners
3. Group the 4 objects
4. Fill the slides background with the desired image
5. Format the grouped object and fill it with the background (rt click,
format object, Fill, Background)
6. Part of background image will appear in object (note: if you move object
around the fill in the object will change to match the background)
7. Right click on object to Save As Picture
8. Insert the newly saved picture into your slide

Kind of a hassle - but just know that it can be done. You could also draw
this custom object in PPT if you have a fine hand...then you'll have it
available to insert any number of images.

I’m no expert so I normally do things the long or wrong way. The coloured
b/ground showing through is because there isn’t any colour in that part of
your image/shape. Try copy and past the original into paint – (this will
change the format I think) anyway, then fill that area with whatever colour
you desire. You obviously can’t use white if you use the “set transparent
colour tool. (to get rid of all the unwanted external area). U can use a very
light grey or beige/yellow. Then ofcause cut or copy and past into P/point.
