Filling in forms -- Office X

E

Erich Mueller

I am unable to fill in forms in a Word document using Office X (SR-1) on
my G5 running OS X 10.3.7.

The places where I should be able to fill things in show tags such as
"FORMTEXT". If I load the same document on a PC I get nice places where
I can type in information.

I presume that there is something trivial wrong -- a checkbox in
"Preferences" or something, but after wasting an hour I still am stuck.

Please email your sugestions if possible.

Thanks,
Erich

Hi Erich-

You didn't say so, but I'm guessing the form was created by a PC
version of Word, right? The Windows OS employs Active-X Controls, such
as the textbox control you referred to. Unfortunately, Active-X is not
supported on the Mac.

I'm not an expert on the matter, so I won't try to resolve the issue,
but if you search the newsgroup you'll find a number of posts about it.

Good Luck |:>)

And thankfully they never ever will. In fact I've heard rumours that
even MS is considering chucking it. Wouldn't that be a Great day for
humanity!

Hi Phillip:

In the interests of bringing you fully up-to-date... :)

In about Year 2000, Microsoft announced as a policy that ActiveX would be
deprecated and replaced with VB.Net. Hmmm.... That was a rather "short"
life; I see the corporation only announced the Software Development Kit for
ActiveX on the Macintosh in October 1996 ...

It's not a rumour, and it's about five years old :)

The reason ActiveX has not completely gone away is "our" fault. We, the
users. Large companies that appear on the Fortune 500 list are "developing
new projects" in VB.Net. But they have allowed Bill Gates to understand
that they would be greatly displeased if ActiveX were to suddenly go away,
given that they have millions of dollars worth of legacy code written for
it.

Small users like me continue to write ActiveX because we're too damned lazy
to learn another language. Sorry about that :)

Cheers

Hi Erich,

If you're still having problems with this you might also check the
following:

1. See if you have "View Field Codes" enabled in MacWord by selecting Word->
Preferences-> then deselecting the "Field Codes" option if it is selected.
2. Make sure the document is locked.

Best,

Matt-
