Filling series

I have a range of cells into which I need to enter an eight character
reference number. The number is made of of four alpha characters
followed by four numerical ones - BETA1010, BETA1011, BETA1012 etc.

Is there any way at all that I can enter BETA into all of the cells
first, then put BETA1010 in the first cell, highlight down and then fill
in series automatically BETA1011, BETA1012 etc. choosing the increment
value as I wish?

Hi

I just did this with BETA1010 in a cell and filling it down (using Excel 2K)
without the need for separate steps. What version are you using? Try filling
down with the CTRL key held if it doesn't work without.

You can fill a series with alpha-numeric characters, as long as the numeric
is at the end.

However, you asked about choosing an increment.
To accomplish this, you must fill the first 2 cells manually, where the
second cell sets the size of the increment.

In cases where you wish to have the string end in an alpha, you can
increment the numeric by inserting a space between the numeric and the
alpha.

Seems I wasn't using AUTOFILL.
