Film from Publisher

With 'digital-direct to press' it's getting harder to find
anyone who can create film positives (for silkscreening)
from Publisher. I've been recommended to dump Publisher
and get a used, older version of Adobe Illustrator, being
promised that it's easier to create film from that. I
don't really need the learning curve on a new program
right now, and already have lots of stuff in Publisher
that I don't want to re-do in another application.

I suppose a PDF from Publisher is one way to go, but I
need to hold tight tolerances. Any suggestions are very
welcome.

Film is now a rare breed.

Why do you need to create film?

I never have any issue with tolerances at all making PDF files from
Publisher. I have done scale drawings and offset printed them via PDF - no
problem.

Unless you are onto something new, as far as I know the
only way to expose the emulsion on the screen for
silkscreen printing is with a film positive. I wish it
were otherwise. The screen printing is for designations
on the front panels of commercial electronic gear.

They use laser in Malaysia. It is incredibly fast and does an awesome high
quality job.

They do it straight from screen to the laser. They do some large sizes.
