filter by form crash

Hi

I'm having problems with a Access 2003 to filter by form.

I have several forms each with sub forms, if I use filter by form to search
for data on the "parent form" everything works fine, when the data I'm
searching for exists.

But if the data does not exist, Access gives an error and closes.

filter by form works fine where sub forms are not used, even when the data
searched is not present, the form displays blank fields.

any advice would be great
