"Filter By Form" returns 0 entries

Access 2000 SP/3 with linked table from a SQL 2000 SP3a server. When
opening a table and running a filter by form, if there are more than a
couple hundred valid entries, zero entries are returned. This is not
duplicatable on Access 2003 or Access 97, but is on all Access 97. You can
visually inspect the data and see that there are valid entries with the
given value.
