Filter in short-cut menu

Retry of question from 10/15:

The filter options in my short-cut menu are grayed out. This includes Filter
By, Filter Excluding, Filter For, and Remove Filter. The sort
asceding/descending options, however, and enabled.

What would cause Access to gray out these options on my form? My form is a
sub-form and it is being displayed in datasheet view.
