Filtering ActiveProject.Tasks

Is there a better way to find tasks that match a desired selection beyond
looping through the Tasks collection? I've tried using filters, but to get
the filters to work properly you need to make sure that you've got an active
task sheet, and the task sheet's outline is fully expanded. I can't find a
way to automate the latter.
