Filtering with a macro

Is it possible to create a macro that will filter for start dates of
today and earlier? The custom auto-filter dialogue box has a choice
"equal to or earlier than" on the left, but no choice "today" on the
right.

Also, if this can be done, is it possible to run this filter on
opening the file?

You can just type 'today' in the right hand side - it will populate it with
the current date.

If you want to run a filter on opening a file, create a view that uses that
filter, open the view (activating the filter) and then save the file. When
you reopen the file, you will be using that view and therefore the filter.
