Normally when you filter a field, on the status bar you can see the number of records filter, eg "6 of 20 records filtered." One spreadsheet I am working on just says "Filter Mode". How do I make thenumber of filtered records appear on status bar?

When your list has many formulas, the Status Bar may show "Filter Mode"
instead of a count of the visible records. There are articles in the

Instead of subtotal, you could use the AutoCalc feature, which is
workaround #2 shown here:
