filters with value list from customized fields

I am attempting to create a filter that would contain a
value list from a customized text field. Is this possible
and if so could I get a few pointers.

Tools-Customize-Fields
Go to Text field, setup a value list (predefined values).
Insert column into layout and press filter button. You
can now filter per predefined value list (e.g. pending,
in progress, or per assigned Project Manager/Engineer).
