FINAL versions of Office 2004 applications after 11.1.1 updater?

Tony

What are the final versions of Office 2004 appliations after applying
the Office 2004 version 11.1.1 updater?

I have the ones shown below, yet do not know if I am missing something,
since it is said that the updater improves stability of Word 2004, yet
such application has not changed its version and remains as 11.1.0:

Microsoft AutoUpdate 1.1.2 <-- after "Help/check for updates"
Microsoft Entourage 11.1.0 <-- not updated??!!
Microsoft Excel 11.1.1
Microsoft PowerPoint 11.1.1
Microsoft Word 11.1.0 <-- not updated??!!
MSN Messenger 4.0.0 <-- not updated??!!

Why this important information is not included with the updater
documentation? How to know then if you are really up-to-date?

Microsoft: is that so difficult to make things right?

Thanks.

An update to Office was also included that affected ALL apps and their
handling of graphics--particularly PICT files. Apparently all Office 2004
apps display graphics on screen using PICT files, so this will help even the
apps that are as yet unpatched (Entourage and Word).

Your listed versions are correct.

Mark

Pict Files??! How turn of the century! The very first images type for
Mac when the first mac came out was Pict files.

Hi Tony:

Give them a break!! It was only after a year of whining in here that we got
the About menu item to show the version number at ALL!!!

They'll get it right in the next version :) You don't really believe that,
do you?? :)

Cheers

(Actually it was more like after 5 years of complaining in the beta
program...)

What I've normally seen in this type of situation is that when
the next release comes out, the About menu will still show the
original version number since the fix was hard coded in
quick-and-dirty just to silence all of the complaints :)

Hi Jeff:

Oh, I *wish* you hadn't said that :) You might give them ideas...

It's not, actually: in Mac Office 2004, the version number is in a
particular file that is part of the build. But human beings sometimes
forget to update the file, and a given service pack may not actually contain
the file in question. So you get the case where a service pack has applied
correctly, but you will see it only in the apps where that specific file was
updated.

John,

We all know that sometimes installers do not install properly. The only
way to be sure that all was installed and updated OK is if you know
exactly the versions of all the applications after the installation.
And that should be clearly indicated in the readme or other
documentation.

That is the only way. Otherwise if you install Office 11.1.1 and then
find that some applications are 11.1.1 but others show previous
versions, you cannot be sure if all went OK or not.

And then, again, you start losing your time... Why is it so difficult
to make things right. Easy. The Mac way... for Microsoft...

Hi Tony:

I am not sure that we "all" share your prejudices. And I am not sure that
there is "only [one] way" of doing things. I am sure that most of the folks
in here don't need a lecture on software development KRAs...

We have raised the issue of the version number appearing in About for every
application, and they have that on the list. But I suspect repairs to the
Spanish spelling mechanism and a few others might actually get done a little
before this one.

Cheers

John,

Sure. And I appreciate your support.

BTW, I did not want to teach or lecture about anything. I just wanted
to point out the issue, since it seems that not everybody understood
it. In fact, that is my experience with Microsoft. As an example I
could tell you about the Spanish Custom Dictionary issue that you
mention. Since setting the custom dictionary to "none" seemed to fix
the problem (which does not, as I have explained with serious
consequences like deleting all dictionary contents!!!), it seems that
nearly a year later Microsoft has not yet fixed it, being a significant
issue. So, they did not get the right message in the first place. That
is why I try now to explain it with full detail.

Finally, it seems to me that it would be so easy and quick doing things
right that sometimes that would save a lot of time and effort to all.
In other words, doing things right is usually much more efficient than
doing them wrong and then having to fix them.

But as said, I do thank you all for your kind support.

And here I am in case I can be of help as well.

Regards,
