Finally able to update Office 2003

B

Barry Rubin

Hoping this can help someone else update Office 2003 with KB834691.

I downloaded the full file and tried to install it numerous times always
getting the same error message 'Error 1311 Source file not found:
E2561412.CAB' Others have suggested hitting 'Retry' repeatedly but this
did me no good.

Copying the file from 2 different legitimate Office CD's to my hard
drive into the folder C:\MSOCache did not help. Also, trying to update
directing from the Office web site yielded an error for the install and
there was no helpful information on fixing the problem.

I dont like to uninstall Office and re-do all my settings but I did try
to 'Detect and Repair' several times to reset the C:\MSOCache folder,
again with no success.

In frustration I copied ALL the cab files from my CD to the C:\MSOCache
folder and this worked!!! The patch installed with no problems. Why it
couldnt read the cab file on its own remains a mystery to me.<g>

Since many solutions to my own problems are often found on a Google
newsgroup search, I post this article as a small repayment.

Hi:

Thanks for sharing and I've posted similar solution for the same problem on
04/7.

FYI, I later learned that Office 2003 comes with a feature called Local
Installed Source which will put some files into the mentioned directory.

Also share with you about this feature on MS KB
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830168.

We should urge Microsoft and system providers with pre-installed Office 2003
to let end users like you and me know this feature to avoid unnecessary
frustration.
