"Find and Replace" and problem with Spaces between words

Using "Find and Replace" I have a problem when I am trying to replace blank
spaces in text, spaces that when turning on "non-printing characters" show
as dots between words. For instance, when there is a space repeatedly eight
spaces long (8 dots) between two words and I want to "find eight
spaces/replace with one space" that the program will not respond to that
command. I seem to recall being able to effect that command in the past.
Maybe not. Is the program designed to do that and if so how?

Another closely related question: just now I "found" a word in the text and
it's formatting was shown below the find box: lower case.

In the replace box I wrote the same word but with different formatting: Bold
in Capitals. I pressed "replace all" and the word did change, but
accompanied by a long space (@10 dots) after the word. Again I could not
erase nine of the spaces to end up with one space between the word and the
next word. And I don't know why find replace added 10 spaces to the command.

Thanks, RM

What do you mean by "the program will not respond to that command"?

When I enter 8 spaces in the Find box and 1 space in the Replace with
box, Word (all versions) replaces the eight spaces with one.

Does Word's Find command find the 8 spaces? Do you have any formatting
specified?

Hi RM-

Not sure what to say about issue #1. Any time I've had to do the same
thing in Word, regardless of platform or version, it has simply been a
matter of typing "x" spaces in the Find field, and 1 space in the
Replace With field. Just make sure you don't have any Formatting
indicated (remember that even though they do not show up visibly on
paper, they carry the same formatting attributes as the surrounding
text).

Issue #2 is probably related to issue #1. Be certain you clear the
conten in the Find/Replace fields - spaces are just as invisible there
as anywhere else.

Hope this helps |:>)
