find and replace

How do it get rid of reference marks - parens and the digits inside
them? My doc has reference like this: ‘He will (39) speak...' I have
other digits in the doc that I don't want to delete.

Hi, Janet,

Open the Replace dialog, click the More button, and check the "Use
wildcards" option. Copy the following line and paste it in the Find What
box:

\([0-9]{1,}\)[ .,;:]

Leave the Replace With box empty and click the Replace All button.

To find out how this works and how to do other wildcard searches, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/UsingWildcards.htm.

Jay, I'm fascinated with all the Find and Replace
possibilities and love the MVP article on using
wildcards. I'm still so new at it that I understand the
first part of your answer but could you explain the
[ .,;:]? Thanks, Jay!

Jay, I answered my own question, I think. You're saying
to find the figures in the parentheses followed by any of
the bracketed punctuation marks. Can you tell me why it
wouldn't find a question mark placed inside the brackets
alongside the other punctuation?

Hi, Maria,

As the article explains in section 5, you can search for characters that
have special meanings in wildcard search expressions by including a
backslash before them. To be able to search for question marks and
exclamation marks, you can change the expression to

\([0-9]{1,}\)[ .,;:\?\!]
