Find cells with external references

When I open my workbook it asks if I want to update linked
information. I don't even need any formulas that use
external references! The workbook that it's looking for
no longer exists. I don't know which cells have formulas
that are linked to this non-existant workbook. How can I
find out which ones need a formula change?

Just change/break the links by edit>links>change

You could search for [ or .xls or other stuff, but I really like Bill Manville's
