FIND does not Find??

I posted this earlier, but even I don¹t understand what I was trying to say.

Short version is... Under what circumstances does the Find feature simply
fail?

Several items in my document are staring me in the face but will not show up
when I paste them into the Find field.

Details on request.

This is a document that started life as a ³compare two versions² document,
if that has any bearing on anything.
