find existing contacts when adding new in Outlook

When I imported my contacts from my old machine I think I switched off the
'advise if duplicate' bit. Now every time I add a new contact with a
different email address but the same name it doesn't let me know. My contacts
often change their email address without letting me know and this is the only
way of checking that it is the same person.

I have even checked it and if the name is slightly different (adding a Mrs
or middle name) it doens't pick it up. It used to if the surname was the same
on my old machine so I must have changed something without realising.

I am using Outlook 2000 on Win XP Home

Hope someone can help as I have over 5000 contacts and don't really want to
search through them all every time someone emails me.

We need a more accurate account of your version. Outlook 2000 had 2
completely different versions: Internet Mail Only or Corp/Workgroup.
If it is the former, then I know of no solution for you.
If it is the latter, then remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service
to your profile so that automatic name checking will be able to pick up your
imported Contacts.
Importing is a poor way to transfer Outlook data. It is not recommended.

It is Internet Mail Only.

I copied the contacts from my old machine via a cable connecting the 2
machines (sort of like a local net work I suppose but without a hub). It took
ages as it would only do a few at a time and I have found some duplicates of
them too so I must have done some twice.

For future reference - what should I have done ?

How you transferred the data is not the problem. How you migrated the data
into Outlook is. Just open the file in Outlook and copy what you want from
it. Don't import it.
Since you are actually using Outlook Express's address book, you might be
able to reset it by going into the Windows Address Book, disabling sharing
in Tools > Options..., restarting the WAB, then re-enabling sharing. Do all
of this with Outlook closed.
