find / replace numbered list

F

fogharty

I have a document that I am editing in which the author has a large
number of auto-numbered lists. The sequence is:

1. question
A. Choice
B. Choice
C. Choice
D. Choice

2. question
A. Choice
B. Choice
C. Choice
D. Choice

as so on.

Is there a way to do a search and replace (and record it as a macro) so
that the A. B. C. D.s will be replaced with lower-case letters, a. b.
c. d.?

I can manually change them all by going to Format>Bullets and
Numbering, but there are many many many questions and that would take
some time.

I'm on Word 2004, the documents were created on a Windows machine; I'm
not certain what version of Word they have.

Thanks

Yeah, that's an Outline List Numbering scheme. The author is probably using
two styles.

1) Click in the first level 1 style in the document (where the "1" question
appears

2) Format>Style>Modify>Numbering>Customise...

In that dialog you will see three tabs. Click the "Outline Numbered" one.
One of the panels will be highlighted, click Customise...

Now in the top left of the new dialog that appears you will see a "Level"
box. Highlight the level 2 selection.

Change the Number Style for the second level of the list to Lowercase
alphabetic and OK your way out.

That will change the entire document.

If you get into trouble, see here:

This is a big subject. It's easy once you know how, but it takes a lot to
explain it.

Cheers
