find/replace probs OSX

Very odd yet consistent problem with OSX Word: the find and
find/replace window does not allow text entry. Will accept text ONLY
if you position cursor in empty field and hit PASTE (Ctl-V), then
erase pasted text, re-enter desired text (still not visible), then hit
ENTER. Only then does desired text appear in window, and then will
often not function right (search for the word "and" in a large text
document comes back empty). Have tried reinstalling Word, and checked
for Normal template probs by renaming to OldNormal, still no luck. Is
there a patch for this?

Using OSX 10.2.6, have installed all MS Office updates through 10.1.5.
Search function seems to work fine in Entourage and other programs.

Vexed.

Hi Tim,

Did you try testing your Prefs?

To test your Preference files, quit *all* Office Applications.
Navigate to your ~/library/preferences/Microsoft folder. Rename the
Microsoft Component Preferences, Word Settings (10), and Microsoft Office
Settings (10) files. When you restart Word, these files will be recreated.
If all is well, you can trash the old files. You will have to reset some
Preferences and AutoCorrect settings.

If this doesn't help, you can trash the new files and rename the old ones
back.

If this doesn't help, you may want to do a removal/reinstall of Office.
(Note: Reinstalling just Word usually doesn't accomplish anything.) If it
comes to that, post back for the correct procedure.

Also, it may not help, but try repairing permissions: Go to Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select your hard disk,
then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair Disk
Permissions".

I don't specifically have a suggestion for you, but I would like you to try
this in another document. And if you have the Styles and Formatting pane
open, close it.

We do have some issues with dialogs due to updates in the underlying OS.
Word X was designed around 10.2.3. All of the dialogs are drawn by OS X,
not Word, and there are some focus and layering issues.

Sorry

I renamed my old preference files as suggested above, and that seems
to do the trick in terms of functionality, although you still have to
press ENTER to see the word you type in the box. I'm curious if
reinstalling all of MS OFFICE might help, I've only reinstalled
Word...can you please outline procedure for that? thanks a lot, Tim

Hi Tim,

Here's the procedure. Note that you must Remove before Reinstalling.

The Remove Office tool is located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X
CD. Install it and run it. Now reinstall Office X using the installer on
the CD or do a Drag & Drop to the Applications folder. Also don't forget to
install any Value Pack items you need. When you've finished, you'll need to
download (<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/>) and install the Office X
10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updaters.

For the most trouble-free installation, run Disk Utility First Aid to repair
permissions before each updater install and when you've completed them all.
To repair permissions go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities; open up
Disk Utility; select your hard disk and click the First Aid tab and then the
button to "Repair Disk Permissions".

Before uninstalling Office, you might want to back up various files. See
here for backup suggestions: <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/backup.html>.

Hope this helps.

I'm happy to report that a complete reinstall of Office worked
wonders. Thanks for the very clear instructions; followed to the
letter it went off without a hitch. peace out, Tim
