My PC came loaded with an option for a 60 day trial of office professional.
I don't need that so downloaded a trial of Office Standard. Having done so
when I try to start it I get the trialfor office professional. How do i
fimnd the office standard trial that I actually want? Do I have to delete
the pre-loaded office and then do it again?

Yes. (If you'd done some research first....)
Uninstall BOTH sets of Office and the Activation agent. Reboot.
Then install your purchased version...

If you had looked on MS to see what the difference between Pro & Std was you
would have seen you could have used your Pro Trial and if neccessary only
used the components apertaining to the std version ie you didnt need to use
either Access or Publisher
So a complete waste of time installing Std Trial

You have to in any case uninstall any Trial together with the Activation
Assistant and reboot prior to installing any paid for version
