Finding the backgroung colour values of cells.

In my job I need to reconcile two sets of data. I
currently match them off using a different background
colour for each matched group. Is it possible to get the
background colour value of cell say 2 cells to the left
in the current cell. I have looked for a formula, but
there doesn't appear to be one.
