Firewall Ad Blocking, blocks certain gifs, but not other

FrontPage 2003



I work on a site using a Dynamic Web Template. The template contains, in the header, a few simple elements, like a spinning globe with a hyperlink attached, a tools area with hyperlinks, a preliminary logotype also with a hyperlink attached, and short preliminary slogan.



After I publish the site and look at it from my workstation everything looks all right, apart from that the logotype is missing. On my workstation I've ZoneAlarm installed, with Ad Blocking set to high. If I lower the Ad Blocking to medium and refresh my view of the site, the logotype reappears and shows up all right. Please note that all other elements in the header and on the pages show up fine even when the ZoneAlarm firewall Ad Blocking is set to high.



I go back to FrontPage, remove the offending logotype, type in the logotype (instead of having it as GIF-image), publish and check the site with the Ad Blocking both set to high and to medium. Everything works fine.



How come that the firewall's Ad Blocking feature, when set to high, only removes the logotype, when in gif image format, but not the globe, or the tools field (all that are inserted in the header via the include function), i.e. in exactly the same way?



How can I overcome the problem with the logotype disappearing in firewall's with Ad Blocking set to high (the same would obviously apply to other visitors as well)?

Sometimes this has to do with the name of the image or the name of the
folder that it's in. What are they called?

Make sure that image and folder are not named "banner". There are other words that are also used,
but I don't have a list.

most fire walls have the ability to block ad banners, pop ups and animations - be
sure your firewall is not blocking animations (which of course is what *some*
adverts are - animated banners, images etc)

I have ZoneAlarm....under "Privacy" go to "site list" then click the options
button and to the Ad-Blocking tab. Un-check "animations" if you have it ticked
to be blocked.

Many thanks all of you for taking the time to look into this problem.

Zone Labs support shake their heads, they have no idea why this is happening. Thereto, on some of there own systems the problem occurs, while on others it doesn't. I've also tested a couple of systems with the Norton Firewall installed, but there it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I've tried to change my settings a longthe lines of what Tom Pepper Willett suggested, which would apply to my own system. But what about other users?

Kathleen suggested that it might have something to do with the name of the image or the name of the folder. But here there is no funnies. The logo image is named "sc_logo_.gif, and is located in "/images/gifs"? De second underscore is due to that there are somme additional files with, if I may call it "suffixes" to the logo name. But i makes no difference if the last underscore is included in the name, or not.

I also checked up on Thomas' suggestion about the "banner" idea, but in this particular instance there is no such problem.

I guess I'll find out in due course, while I at the same time find the behavior rather strange. If I find a solution I'll post it here.

Hello Andrew,

You are most certainly right in that most firewall can block certain file
types, that is what they are for. I have even shut down my firewall and
still have the same problem, that the logotype disappears. For me,
personally, doesn't it matter if the logo disapears (I know what it looks
like), but my problem is that it will probably disapear from general web
users view, and that I don't particulary like. Also, in my own case there is
nothing like a banner, pop up or animation, just a plain gif file, called
sc_logo.gif. Nothing strange, as far as I can tell, apart from the last
underscore before the full stopp, but even removing this causes the same
behavior. Strange. I'm sure I'll find out why this happens one day, till
then I just type in the logo (its a very simple logo) and that's it. It
works, and if it works why not?
