Anybody know what port number Office 2003 uses to access the Internet? Unable to activate via web, pain the the rs to phone for every copy, I have 13 this week with 60 next month!!

I have a hardware firewall, Instage EX, I need to open a port, but which one? Microsoft told me to turn off the firewall!!!

So why don't you just turn it off? You'll be connecting to a secure server.

They don't come with a on and off switch? Can't unplug them? What harm could
come by turning them off?

I don't usually answer stupid questions on suposedly techie forums, but here goes..

Yes they have off buttons, but Alias, when they are protecting your company networks, with over 100 users, plus corporate mail servers, you don't 'just switch them off'...Why you may stupidly ask? Well, they are the default gateways for all the machines on the networks, no default gateway, no Internet access. So you may say, change the default gateway to the router then...well yes you could do that, 2 major issues, 1, no network protection at all, 2, have to change dhcp server settings and get everybody to relogon on, change printer settings, VPN settings, need I go on..

What I need is the correct port number to allow Office to access the Internet to activate through the firewall, then close the firewall once all activations are complete

I hope this clears things up a bit.

Yes, it does but I don't understand why you are calling me stupid when I am
only ignorant and want to learn. Perhaps if you rein in your arrogance a
tad, someone will help you.

Alias, after reading many of your replies to many different questions on this forum, I find your last remarks rather like 'the kettle calling the pot black...

Anyway enough of this, port number anyone please

So, you have to continue with the insults. Try Googling your question about
ports and ... well, **** off.

Interesting conversation...

Isn't there a log written by your firewall, that you can examine to find the
right port?

You better hope you just gave him the right answer, or he'll call you
"stupid" too.
