firewall blocking outlook, fix without turning off firewall

I can only access Microsoft Office Outlook, if I turn off the Norton
Firewall. Is there a way of allowing access to my mail without taking off
norton security package and having to reinstall. I am quite worried at
leaving my computer un protected even for a very short period of time.

Dear,

What type of account are using in OL? are you able to access IE?
Why don't you give an exception (list of IP address or your ISP's web site).
Are u using Norton Internet Security - why don't you scan the program
through NIC and give permission to those programs you like to connect to
Internet.

Thanks Anver - I have manaed to sort out the problem.

Not sure if you'll check this again JMFP, but I am having the exact same
problem. Wondering how you resolved it. Basically I can open Outlook, but I
can only send/receive messages with the Norton Firewall setting at low. When
its at the medium setting (default) I get a time out error (<servername>
Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for
a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider
(ISP). Microsoft support shows to disable Email scanning in Norton to solve
this, but that isn't the problem.

the firewall is preventing outlook from talking with the server properly. Is
Outlook allowed to use the ports it needs?

Turn on the Windows Firewall before turning of the Norton application

1.) How do I turn off the Windows firewall?
2). If I then turn off Norton then I have no firewall. Don't I want to have
some protection? Thanks in advance for putting up with my ignorance.

I have assumed you are running Windows XP. Open Control Panel, look for
Security Centre or Firewall and turn it on. Or open Start\Help and type
Firewall and see the instructions

Of course. Read your firewall's documentation on how to configure the
firewall to allow a program to access the Internet.
