first and second page number are the same. Why?

I am inserting page numbers for several chapters. chapter one comes out
fine. however, when i try to paginate chapter 2 (starting with page#55) the
first and second page of the chapter each have "55" as the page number. I
can't get consecutive numbers. Any ideas?

To clarify, are you setting starting numbers for specific sections (or
documents?), or are you using the "Continue from previous section" setting?

I am setting starting numbers for specific documents. . . for instance my
chap. 1 is one complete document. chapter 2 is another separate document.
when I choose insert page number and set up my formatting options (start at
"55"), the first page starts at 55 but the next page shows "55" as well.

There is a section break b/t the two pages (header 1 is section 1 and header
2 is section 2 -- as is the rest of the document). Since I was unsure how to
delete these section breaks, I tried inserting a different page number for
the first page and started a new series of page numbers for the next section
and that seemed to work. (Hopefully)

If you have set a starting number for Section 1, then you need to set
"Continue from previous section" for Section 2. It's possible that the
section break is unnecessary; if you just want a different header/footer on
the first page, you can use the "Different first page" setting on the Layout
tab of Page Setup. See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm
for more.
