first character in subject line is truncated

When I send an email using Outlook 2003, the first character in the subject
line gets deleted. I am on an HP laptop connected wirelessly to DSL modem
router. I just upgraded to Outlook 2003 from 2000 and had the same problem
using 2000.

Email sent from our desktop system using Outlook 2000 and sam DSL modem via
ethernet connection does not have this problem.

Any idea where I should start looking?

Several reports already in this newsgroup indicate that Norton AntiVirus can
have that effect. Disable any mail scanning features in your AV program.

I get the same results after disabling NAV email scanning. But when I
disable NAV Spam Protection I do not have the subject line the problem. At
least on my system it is the Spam Protection software that is stripping the
1st character from the subject line.

TIme to ditch the Symantec junk, then.

Working with a Symantec chat rep, I found the problem is caused by checking
"Use outgoing to improve Norton anti-spam filtering" under Norton Internet
Security-Email & Messaging-Spam Protection-Configure Spam
Procection-Email-Filtering. Once I unchecked this option, the 1st character
in the subject line is no longer missing in sent emails.
