First character problem

I have a problem with MS word 2003 /2007. It does not accept first character
if it is croatian layout keyboard (Ä.ć.Å¡.Ä‘,ž). Also it happens wit bosnian
and serbian layout. If I press space then I cane type croatian characters but
I can not type it as first character.
Operating system is Win XP SP 2 (HP OEM computers preinstalled) wit MS
OFFICE 2003 basic edition.
I have tried office 2007 but the problem is same.
There is no problem with Excel, Wordpad and other, only with word.
