First line of every page

I

iKenny

I'm having a wierd problem where the first line of every page is being
highlighted in black, whether it is Normal text, a Heading 1 text, or
a Heading 2 text. I don't know what the highlighting in black means,
but my highlight color system-wide (OS X 10.3) is set to red, and the
rest of the text on each page highlights in red. Anyway, if the first
line of a page is a heading or the first line of a new paragraph, it
is indented correctly.
However, if the first line on a page is a continuation of a sentence
from the paragraph on the previous page, the first line of the new
page is indented about three spaces into the page. I can't figure out
how to turn off this setting so the first line is not indented at all,
even if it is a continuation of a sentence from the previous page. Can
anyone help?

Thanks.

Display your non-printing characters by clicking Show/Hide.

Now check to make sure that there is no paragraph mark immediately before
the indent.

If someone has used "Enter" to determine where the sentence breaks, Word
will treat the following text as a new paragraph and indent it if you have
indent set for the paragraphs.

As to why the first line of a page is highlighted, I am really not sure.
Internally, word has no concept of "Pages". It "generates" the pages when
it outputs the document to the screen or printer. So there is nothing
special about a start of page to cause it to do anything different.

However, some people use a Word Table to make page-sized frames into which
they pour text. Tables can indeed have complex automatic formatting which
can do special things with the first or last row.

And of course, if the first line of each page is actually a Running Header,
then it has a different style which could indeed have this property set.

I think I need you to tell me how you cause that text to be at the top of
the page :)

You have not mentioned whether you have applied all of the updaters to Word
or not: if you have not, you should. But I have never heard of this
problem.

Cheers
