First page of section reinserts an unwanted page number

The page numbering options in Word2007 (as in earlier versions of Word)
include a tick box that allows the user to use a different header and footer
in the first page of a new section. To my knowledge this is the only means to
omit a page number in a document that has page numbers included in its header
or footer.

At present I am experiencing a recurring problem in Word2007, whereby the
use of the option to have a different header/footer on the first page of a
section is not obeyed by the software; i.e. the header or footer selected for
the rest of the document is imposed on the first page of the section despite
ticking the "different first page of section" box. Hence it is impossible to
omit a page number from a particular page.

It works absolutely fine - as in previous versions of Word. The actual
option for Different First Page is part of the Page Layout settings. If you
have that option checked and it is numbering the first page of subsequent
sections differently than the first section's numbering, it suggests either
you do not have the Same as Previous active or that you have corrupted H&Fs
for some reason.

Did you delete the header/footer content from the first page or change it to
something different from the main header/footer? That's the next step after
clicking different first page.
