First page page number reappears after saving file

Eventhough I disabled the numbering on the first page of my document, it
reappears after I save the file. This problem co-exists with the problem
that my document margins default back to 1.25 even though they were set at
1.0 in the normal template. These problems only occur when saving to CD-ROM,
not to hard disk. It is a recent problem, I never had any problems until 6-8
weeks ago.

What happens if you start Word in Safe Mode? To start in Safe Mode, Use
Start, Run and type in

winword /a

and press enter.

Terry,

It doesn't change a thing. Both problems re-occur. What I should note is
that the problem is not consistent, some files safe without the margins
resetting themself. Typically these files are shorter or less complex. Yet
at the same time, I could be saving a file with just my name in it and the
same problem happens.

I see Beth is trying a different tack in the previous thread.

Are your documents all being produced from the same template? Is it
normal.dot or a custom template? Could it be corrupt?

Hi Terry,

I know I got two tracks going on what appears now to be a similar issue. I
have renamed the normal.dot template and thus created a brand new normal.dot
template at Word restart, it doesn't change the issue. And remember it only
happens when I save to CD-ROM, nothing like this happens when I save to HD.
It's just that I do most of my work through CD-RWs, for practical and
portability reasons. Furthermore it happens while the document in question
is active, I am not closing the document and then re-opening it. The
document changes it formatting while on screen.

Automatically update styles! See previous post.

Terry,

I am not certain what that means or does: "automatically update styles". I
found the Autocorrection tab under options, I don't know what else to do
there.

Open Format, Styles and select Normal style: make sure that the
Automatically Update check box is cleared.

Terry,

Given that I have two threads going on a similar issue, I'ld like to stick
to one of them. Can we shift this discussion(?) to my other thread? I did
what you suggested and found that the update box was clear (no check). All
other settings were as they should be (1.0 margins).

Peter.
