First Slide in slide show doesn't show custom animations, rest do

I have created a Powerpoint 2003 presentation with custom animations. Nothing
fancy. I have made sure that the slide show uses "timings if present". When I
try to create a .pps file or Package to CD, the first slide does not have the
automated timings, I have to mouse click each one to see them. However, the
rest of the show from slides 2 through whatever work fine!

What's going on?

What's different about the animations on the first slide?

In fact, what *are* the animation settings on the first slide? On the
second?

Just as an experiment, I removed a sound file Music.mp3 that I had as a short
20 second prelude to the presentation, and Viola, the timings and Package to
CD working as expected, without any further changes. So, it is NOT the
animation settings, it has something to do with the sound file! Any
ideas/suggestions/comments as to what could cause this?

Yes, the file with the music prelude plays correctly in "View Show" in both
..ppt and .pps. However, when "Packaged for CD", the first slide animations
are not "automatic", but again, the rest of the slides are.

Another perplexing thing has happened on my other presentations.

A little backgrounder. I am actually making a series of presentations for a
seminars I give. These are handout CDs of the Seminar experience. I am trying
to keep the same theme, ergo I have the 20 sec music prelude in ALL 8 seminar
sessions, which are one hour long shows for each, with narration. By the way,
the narratives work great!

I have stripped out the music prelude on two of the presentations, and now
the narrative are not in sync with the show. I have even gone back and
"re-rehearsed timings", but the slide animations do not sync up now when
"Packaged for CD". By the way, the sync is there in the .ppt and .pps, but
not in the CD???

I have learned by now not to actually Package to CD, I am Saving to Folder,
just so I don't waste a bunch of plastic!

Did the file play correctly in PPT with the sound (but before you packaged
to CD)?

This might help:

Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)

Without knowing exactly what animation settings you've got for your sound
files and any animations in the first couple of slides, I can't even venture
a guess as to the problem.

But with regard to the synching, don't count on PPT to synch your sounds and
slides -- you're just lucky it's working well on PPT right now. Read
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/synchronizing.htm for
information why. If the synchronization is important, you might check into
VoxProxy http://www.voxproxy.com -- it has a media handler (in addition to
the animated characters) which I believe should help synch the sound/media
with the slides. *And* it runs with the PPT Viewer (which is simply amazing
to me).
