fiscal year calendar

i have a problem with the fiscal year calendar of the timescale - gantt chart
- which does display 53 weeks instead of 52. as a result week 01 is the one
of 5th january while according to any calendars, 5th january belongs to week
02 2009. is there a way this can be changed? this is leading to lots of
confusions and incorrect data with regards to timing and deadlines. Many
thanks in advance

Hello Helene,

It's not just the fiscal year settings. If you uncheck that option,
you'll note that there are still 53 weeks in the year. I don't
believe this setting can be changed.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

yes indeed, that's correct. i tried all options i am aware of and could not
figure out how to solve the issue. i cannot believe there is no way. if such
tool is meant to be a planning one, it should secure the total amount of week
numbers a year is correct. how can we plan then?
thanks in advance - helene

Hello Helene,

I don't know if it suits your needs, but you can change the
timescale to show date information rather than week 1, week2 etc.
Again, I don't believe the timescale information -- other than
formatting -- can be configured by the user.

Hi Helene,

This is a matter of arithmetic and choice. Arithmetic says there are 52
weeks and 1 day in a year. Choice says that the week begins on Monday, or
perhaps Sunday or even Saturday or Friday, depending on your religion or
ethnic community or company choice. Try this: go to Tools/Options/View tab
and select a Date format 1/WO5. Now Insert/Recurring task and select Yearly
for the Last Monday in December for 20 occurrences. Now click the plus sign
next to the task name to expand and see all the ocurrences. You can see from
the Start column that the weeks vary starting at week 01 or week 52 or week
53! This has nothing to do with with Project, just the arithmetic of the
calendar.

You're not quite correct that there is a universal definition of "Week 1"
and in fact there are several definitions in common use. Some organizations
define "Week 1" as the week during which Jan 1 occurs, the week of Dec 29
2008 is Week 1 2009. Others use the first week during which at least 4 days
are in the new year - the week of Jan 5, 2009 would be Week 1 of 2009 but
the week of Dec 31, 2007 was Week 1 of 2008. Still others elect to define
it as the first week where all the days are in the new year - the week of
Jan 5 for 2009. And to make it even more interesting, some use calendar
days while others just use business days when deciding.

There is half a solution:

Provided (1) your project plan is less than 1 year long and (2) your
project will finish on or before the last day of the last calendar week
in the year then we can use MS Project options to display the correct CW
for 2009 as follows:

Menu -Project:project Information- - set "Project Start Date" to the
first day of the first week in your calendar year. For 2009, assuming
you have "Week starts on" set to "Sunday" in menu
-Tools:Options:Calendar- then set "Project Start Date" to 28 December
2008

In the Gantt Chart Timescale panel set -Units- to "Week" and -Label- to
"W1, W2, W3, W4......(From Start)"

Your week number will now display correctly for 2009 but if your
project runs into 2010 then the week number will continue to count
upwards into 53, 54, 55 etc. Hence the restrictions with this solution
mentioned above.

Finally, you might like to go in to menu -Tools:Options:Schedule- and
set the value against "New Tasks" to "Start on Current Date" to make
adding new tasks easier later in the year.

It's only half a solution because it only works for 1 calendar year at
a time but it might just do the job.

GREAT - That will indeed do the trick for now.
thank you so much - at least my MS project calendar is aligned with the
fiscal one, in terms of week numbers. Thank you so much.
