Fix positioning of page number

Hi there,
I am trying to fix the positioning of the page numbers in my document
I am working with sections, so I suspect the error may lie somewher
there, but I cannot find it. If you have a look at the attache
document, the page numbers iii, iv, 1, 5, and 11 are lower than th
others. It is easiest to see when the ruler and gridlines are turne
on. After a lot of head-scratching and trying to fix it, I am turnin
to this forum in hope for help which would be very very muc
appreciated.

I am unable to access the referenced site to download your file, but your
first line of attack should be to display nonprinting characters and see
whether you have empty paragraphs causing the discrepancy. Also check to see
whether the header/footer margin is different in the sections where the page
number is incorrect. If this is Word 2003 or earlier and you used Insert |
Page Numbers, it could be that the frame has been nudged out of place in
some sections.

You're exactly right The footer sections that contain the offending page
numbers are smaller than the rest of the pages, thus the number appears
lower, because all of the other pages have an extra empty paragraph under the
page number. You need to display the nonprinter characters to see them.
Then you should be able to either remove the extras, or add one to the "low"
pages.

Here's what I found:

Pages iii and iv are both in the "First Page Footer" and are in Sections 2
and 3, respectively. Section 3 is linked to Section 2, so they both have the
same problem. Adding an extra return after the page number corrected the
problem.

Pages 1, 5, and 11 also used the "First Page Footer", so they were
automatically corrected when I added the extra return.

All of the other pages are using the "Even Page Footer" and "Odd Page
Footer", so they were OK.

Bottom line - add another return after the page number on one of your "First
Page Footer" sections, and you will be good to go. This will be easier than
retooling the entire document to get the correct header/footer sections on
the correct pages, I think.

This is a common problem when content is pasted from one header/footer to
another. No matter how carefully you select the content *excluding* the
paragraph mark, and no matter how carefully you select the paragraph mark
before pasting, Word will still insert an extra, empty paragraph, which you
must delete. I find this behavior inexplicable and annoying, but as long as
you are aware of it, you can work around it. Of course, it is much easier
to be aware of it if you work with nonprinting characters displayed, as I
always do.
