Fixed decimals turning themselves on

I have a user who has experienced something very odd the past two days. He
can be keying numbers, and suddenly Excel will start inserting a decimal
point one digit in from the right, then two, and finally three. Yesterday
when this happened we went in to Tools, Options, Edit and found Fixed
decimals turned on with 3 digits to the right of the decimal. We turned the
option off.

This morning he started experiencing the same behavior from Excel. He went
in and looked at the option, and it had turned itself on again.

Any ideas what's going on?

I think that this is a setting that's kept in the windows registry. Did
anything change so that he didn't have permissions to write to it?

This isn't one of those options that travel with the workbook. But is there any
chance you have a helpful macro (not likely, but...)
