Fixed Duration Tasks Changing

C

Craig Kalugin

I have been using Project 2003 for several years now. All of a sudden i have
a weird and dangerous problem. When i add tasks to my project, i always used
fixed duration (Not Effort Driven). The tasks duration never changes unless i
change it. Now all of a sudden i have tasks (not all) changing duration
whenever i do a "Level Resources". Keep in mind i use a project with many
subprojects. Has anyone seen this before. Is something corrupted? I thought
durations are not supposed to change? Please help. As of now my huge project
is useless.

Hi Craig,

I suppose this happens (only?) with tasks having several assignments?
In that case, remember there is a checkbox in the Resource Leveling form
"Leveling can adjust individual assignments on a task"
and I imagine that one is checked;

Now if a task say 1 day has 2 assignments and 1 resource is overloaded on
"the day" and the other one isn't, Leveling will push forward the work by
the oveloaded resource and leave the other one alone: duration of each
assignment is still one day but duration of the task is 2 days.

No. This is happening on tasks with only one resource, that i know of. There
may be some with (2) our max resources, but the ones i know about and can see
are only (1) resource. Is there any way i can send you my project files to
llok at? It sure would be easier i think to see what i mean. Also, none of
the boxes are checked for leveling resources. Also keep in mind, on tasks
that have (2) resources, the duration needs to remain constant. In other
words, if a task has a duration of 6 hours, and i assign (2) resources, i
need the duration to remain at (6) hours. The reason is i use project for
scheduling our machine shop, and what i do is assign a CNC operator and a CNC
machine as a resource to a task. That way both are scheduled for capacity.
