Fixed unit task - duration doesn't recalculate

Babar

I have a fixed unit task with effort driven checked in a project. When
I assign more than 1 resource to it, the duration doesn't recalculate.
Even if I try the same thing on a new project on my computer, the
duration doesn't change .. weird.

I think it might be do with some setting but I'm not completely sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have automatic recalculation enabled in your Microsoft Project?

Babar,

I am going to presume you are estimating by duration and adding multiple
resources at the same time. If this is the case, there is a quirk in the
calculation.

When you do this, Project assumes you want all resources added to work the
full duration.

To demonstrate, create a task with a duration of 5 days. Highlight the
task, then split your screen (Window/Split). Add one resource in the left
side (under Resource Name) of the lower screen and then click OK. Then add a
second resource and click OK. At this point you will see what I believe you
are expecting to see, both resources assigned 20h of work and the duration at
2.5 days.

Create a new task, except in this one add one resource and then add the
second and then click OK. What you will see is that both resources are
assigned 40h of work and the duration stays at 5 days.

If you add the Work field next to Duration in your view, you will see in the
first instance that total work stays at 40h (as one would expect using Fixed
Units/Effort Driven), and in the second instance total work doubles to 80h.

I hope this helps.
