Fixed Work Hours

I'm setting up a project file for my accounting firm, I'm wondering if
this is possible, I needed to setup tasks like this:

1) Task 1, Work = 20h
- Paul, Work = 5h
- Steven, Work = 2h

Is it possible to add resources like this even tho the work hours don't
add up to 20 hours? The problem is we know we're allotting 20hours to a
task, we just don't know who will do it yet. Is there a way to get work
hours for a task to not auto adjust?

Hello userentry,

No, sorry. You can set the *Duration* at 20 hours but when you
assign resources the work will equal work. Set the task as a fixed
duration and then assign your resources, specifying their work.
Project will calculate the assignment units for the resource to
accomplish the work in the 20 hour duration.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

You could use another column to record your estimates for the total work
for a task. You could even rename that column to something useful.

Since you don't know who the resource is, why don't you put a
placeholder resource "TBD" or similar? Assign their maximum
availability to something really high (e.g., 1000%) so they do not
constrain when these tasks occur. When you do know who is going to do
the work, transfer hours or replace TBD.
