These things worked for me, in a limited test.
a) delete the sheet from the workbook that contains the pivot table and
replace it with a known good sheet from another workbook.
b) ensure that there are no blank rows or rows with NULL values in the
data going into the Pivot table.
c) Tell clients that they should use analysis services for this sort of
thing, not Excel!
