Flaky synchronisation

Nick

I'm having some problems synchronising notebooks over a network.

I have a main PC that I use at the office, with a set of notebooks on a
central fileserver- every time I open this PC, the synchronisation works fine.

However, I also have a tablet that I use in the office and at home. There
are times when I come into the office and ON2007 won't synchronise to the
server notebooks. I tend to put the TPC into standby alot, rather than shut
down, when coming into work from home. It seems that the only way to 'relink'
the synchronisation is to shut the TPC down and reboot.

Any ideas as to why this could be happening? I can access the rest of the
network OK after waking from standby - even outlook (2003) finds the exchange
server and behaves itself as expected.

cheers

Hi Nick,

Are you using Windows Offline Files with the fileserver and your desktop
at home?

I don't actively use it, but the option within Tools/Options/Synchronisation
is unchecked (i.e. disable Windows Offline Files....)

Should I tick this ?

Hi Nick,

A question is whether you have any files (outside of OneNote notebooks)
that are being kept offline on your computer with Windows Offline Files?
More importantly, are your OneNote notebooks being kept offline by
Windows Offline Files? (the actual .one files). If yes, the question is
why? Is it because they are in a location that is automatically kept
offline (e.g. My Documents could be a good candidate for that) or is it
because you set the manually to be kept offline (maybe back in ON
2003?)?

If you are keeping the .one files offline with Windows Offline Files and
you can change that, please do so. If you can't change it, activate the
setting you mentioned. I don't know though if your ON syncing experience
is going to be a happy one if the syncing happens through Windows
Offline Files (if the .one files are in a location that is kept offline
by Windows Offline Files, syncing happens through the Windows Offline
Files API even if that setting is enabled. In your scenario, you should
avoid that particular API).

ON has issues when syncing to two different computers that are never
online at the same time (I presume when you are at work, your notebooks
from home are offline and vice versa) through the Windows Offline Files
API. It's best to avoid this situation until MS has fixed the bugs.

Please let me know what your situation is.

Thanks,

Patrick Schmid

Hi Patrick

Many thanks for your help - I did have offline files enabled (though don't
ever remember enabling it - I certainly don't intentionally keep offline
files).

I've disabled it - and will see how i get on!

cheers

Hi Nick,

Just to confirm, you switched them off in Windows itself and not with
the setting in OneNote?

Yep - through My Computer/Tools/Folder options etc.

Will feedback if I have any more problems.
