Flat vs. Contouring

Hello: we are experiencing the problem of task dates overlapping by one day. It occurs seemingly unpredictably. I have even manually made the corrections in the shared resource pool resource usage view. I have recently analyzed the "Contouring" that project has apparently applied. Now I'm wondering if after making the manual changes, I must change all the contoured tasks to "flat" assignment type. THis is of course for those we are not contouring (using as soon as possible, single resource, fixed units, et al).

Can you offer a solution to these? Also, please lend some insight as to how the contouring works. When does Project automatically add it? (I haven't manually added any contouring to these tasks.) Is changing these to "flat" assignment type the answer to solving the overlapping tasks? (Task2 starts on same day Task1 finishes, when Task2 is pred, and work is denoted in full day units.)

Sounds like there's a disparity between the hours in a workday as
defined by the calendar and a "day" of duration as defined by the
calendar options page.
