Flesh Kinkaid reading level

This is a silly question, but it is driving me slightly nuts. I am a graduate student writing tons of papers. When I use spell check the drop down at the end of the spell check says my Flesh Kinkaid reading level is often either or 3rd or 4th level. Before I installed Word 2008 I was always at 12. Academic insecurity aside, any ideas?

It's broken. Ignore it in 2008.

Hope the coming patch will fix it. In the meantime, tell MS that this is
a problem for you by using Help | Send Feedback in Word--the more
complaints about it they count in their database, the higher the
priority--and the more likely that they will remember to test it before
releasing the next major version.

Actually, I have to say that using Flesh Kincaid for say, elementary
school teachers to write appropriately for their students might be a
good idea, but I can't see what value it offers a graduate student.
