Flickering Cursor

J

Jamus

I've just upgraded to Word 2007 and am having problems with a flickering
cursor. On some occasions after I start Word, I get a cursor that flickers
very quickly between the pointer and the process circle. The flickering does
not interfere with the functioning of the cursor, and I do not get the
flickering consistently (this, in fact, tends to occur after a resume from
hibernate). I know that this may occasionally happen when Word has too many
functions going on, but this is simply an empty new document. Moreover,
changing to other views doesn't make any difference. I suspect the problem
may be due to the touchpad (I use a Sony Vaio) (doubleclicking on the
touchpad slows the flickering to one-second flickers, while doubleclicking
the actual touchpad buttons does nothing). Still, I suspect the problem lies
with Word, not just the touchpad, since the flickering cursor does not happen
with other applications open at that time. Any ideas?

You may be correct about the touchpad, though I also suspect the printer
driver may cause this too. Try going tot he Internet support sites for both
the printer and touchpad: make sure you have the latest drivers and then
delete and reinstall the printer. If the problem continues, reinstall the
Touchpad driver. If the problem continues, disable the touchpad and try
using a mouse to see if that stops it.

I have the same problem.

I am reasonably certain this is NOT a problem with mouse or touchpad
drivers. This is a problem with Office 2007, which for some unknown reason
starts running the print spooler, spoolsv.exe, full tilt until it eats up an
abhorrent amount of system resources.

If anyone knows of a solution to this problem, please post.

Have you tried deleting the printer driver and reinstalling it - checking
first that you have the latest driver? This isn't a problem with a host of
printers that I have used with WindowsXP/Vista/Office2007 - both networked
and USB connected. Word does need to see a printer driver to work correctly
and if you have a laptop and normally use a Networked printer, you will need
to install the printer driver as a local device for Word to work correctly
whilst the printer is inaccessible.

After I change the default printer (Canon IR 2880 connected through the LAN)to Microsoft XPS it stop flickering.Although that printer was locally installed printing to a TCPIP port.

The flickering cursor is the symptom of a bad networked printer being set as
the default printer on the Workstation. Try deleting the printer and
reinstalling but make sure that you have the latest driver for it.

That made the trick for me.

Same problem here I had a Canon irC5055 as default printer. Same symptoms.

I switched to another default printer ==> OK
