There are several likely causes for this:
* The disk is not in Macintosh format (if you have an older Mac, it can't
read a PC-formatted floppy)
* You are trying to open the file from the floppy disk. This is always a
bad idea with a Word document because a floppy disk often does not have
enough spare room to open a Word document. When you open a document, Word
creates temporary files that take up as much as ten times the size of the
original file. If there is not enough room to create those files, Word
cannot open a document.
* The floppy disk has suffered a mechanical failure of the disk itself.
This is quite common, and is the reason we recommend that you avoid using
floppies if at all possible. Can you read the floppy disk with the Finder?
If so, drag the file from the floppy to the hard disk and try to open it
there.
Hope this helps
