floppy drive woes

Win XP SP-2, Word 2002

After I save a word file to floppy (or copy a word file from the Explorer to
floppy) Word will frequently try to access the floppy drive (you can hear
the loud noise since no disk in the drive, and the floppy drive light is
flickering). Even if I try to download a Word attachment, the program tries
to access the floppy drive. It's beginning to drive me crazy.

Any suggestions?

Hi John,

Do not EVER save a document directly to floppy or open a document
directly from floppy. Doing so is an excellent way to damage the file
so you'll never be able to open it again! ALWAYS copy the file from
the floppy to the hard drive, work on the file on a hard drive, then
close the document and copy it back to the floppy.

The problem involves the many temporary files Word uses while you
work. If the floppy doesn't have enough space for these files, Word
will happily corrupt the document file.
