floppy errors with office products

I sometimes get errors Unable to open... unable to read...
on floopy disks where excell and word files have been
saved. Am I always experiencing a disk error or can it be
an error in how the office programs try to open and read
the files? Is there a way to recover some of these files?

Copy the files to the hard-drive to work with them. Working directly
from the floppy will eventually result in data loss due to the way
temporary files are created and deleted in the original directory when
editing the documents.
