Hi RMS,
Unfortunately, in Word the use of the MS Office Drawing Canvas (formerly MS Draw98) has been needed to provide the support platform
to use the 'autoroute' connectors. You can, as an alternative, create the charting/diagram in Powerpoint and then copy or link it
into Word. A Powerpoint slide object is essentially a drawing canvas.
In Word you can manually place lines with connector ends and then 'group' them together with the objects they connect, but the
Draw/Drawing Canvas provides a 'boundaried' work surface to contain the elements and offer auto arrange within those boundaries.

It seems quite silly that Word requires you to use the drawing canvas to have
access to the connector lines. I found that the drawing canvas simply gets
in my way when I'm trying to produce a simple flow chart within a document,
so I disabled it.
Please allow connector lines outside of a canvas. Thanks. >>
